KDE SDDM Login screen white everything, can't even read texts?

Why is this? I see my three users, but can't read anything. The screen is white.

Sorry for the necro-post but did you ever find a solution to this?  It still happens even on excalibur.

FYI KDE is dumping sddm in favor of their new Plasma Login Manager (PLM) which will only work on systemd systems. sad

Thanks, I did find the bug from https://lists.debian.org/debian-qt-kde/ … 00475.html

I guess the background variable in /var/share/sddm/themes/debian-breeze/theme.conf was set to a non-existent file.  I set it to one found in /usr/share/wallpapers/Next/contents/images

Figures.  I guess that means no more KDE on FreeBSD as well.  Back to XFCE then.  Well, at least if one wants to use their PLM.  As long as SDDM is still compatible, we're ok?

Yes until the bitrot settles in theoretically they have left it to die for years now like the Xorg weasels have done or as I have read in places they are going to further enshitify it with systemd-home for the login. The cancer keeps spreading, you may want to look at LXQt it is what settled on after dumping KDE after more than twenty-five years of use due to this garbage they do.

Re: KDE SDDM Login screen white everything, can't even read texts?

I'm not a KDE user. I just never cared for it, but It does concern me to see any opensource software take a non-free direction. Like forcing systemd or other unwanted dependencies.

If you would allow me I'd like to make an attempt to have a positive outlook.

That good news is to simply run KDE with a different login manager and avoid the systemd nonsense.  At least until systemd creeps into the remaining KDE components.  To be realistic I'm sure the systemd, rust, etc rot is coming to KDE just like it is with gnome. But hopefully it's at a pace user's can plan their exit.  Or even better find solutions.

https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-lo … equests/42

The danger here in this fork of SDDM becoming the standard display manager of KDE, is that it will result in SDDM being abandoned - and despite all the wordplay, the goals are obvious.  Greater systemd dependence [at the expense of portability] and the rationale? :

https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/1 … usable_on/

"The reason the systemd support is mandatory is to make it easier to lean more on systemd for more tasks.

At the end of the day, we don't ideally want to cut support for the BSDs and other niche distros, but we also don't want to hold back on making the best experience possible for the majority user base."

That first statement is weasel words.  This is simply an attempt to weave in systemd dependency by systemd advocates.

The second statement essentially means that only Red Hat/Debian/etc matter.

Re: KDE SDDM Login screen white everything, can't even read texts?

is that it will result in SDDM being abandoned

It already was I read somewhere in a posting that it had been years since a commit was made to it, just like the Xorg people and their effort kill that off with the bitrot. At this point in time anyone who seriously believes they are not going systemd only is a GD fool. And get in contact with me I have bridge for sale in Brooklyn going dirt cheap only one owner... wink
