If he really wants it, he can buy one himself ![]()
Intel B580 is a decent card for the price.

Go for AMD, much easier to get working right than Nvidia.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/ New Vuu-do isos uploaded October 2025!
Vuu-do GNU/Linux, minimal Devuan-based Openbox and Mate systems to build on. Also a max version for OB.
Devuan 5 mate-mini iso, pure Devuan, 100% no-vuu-do.
Devuan 6 version also available for testing.

... and AMD has long time support due to kernel drivers. Drivers do not drop out that fast as with NVidea.

Go with the AMD. Nvidia has been a big problem with Debian-based distros since the release of Trixie. Also if you want to distro hop AMD is more likely to work on all distros.

Gday
I would recommend
Upgrade every 3 years
- HDD
- SSD
- NVME
Upgrade every 5 years
- PSU
In Australia I would recommend using
Scorptec or Mwave
I personally recommend
AMD CPU - Ryzen's
AMD video cards
Western Digital HDDS
Crucial SSD/NVMES
Gigabyte Mobos
Silverstone PSU's
Avoid
HP printers
Dlink networking gear
Cisco networking gear
Microsoft surface laptops/pads
Apple phones/ipoads/laptops

Checking out scorptech today - 07/Nov/2025
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/gra … amd?page=1
They list
RX 6600 cards for AUD$329
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/gra … 600-cld-8g
or RX 7600 for AUD$379
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/gra … ing-oc-8gd
While upgrading the video Card , take the time to dust out the case , check all the fans , check all the cables
and be sure the new video card doesnt consume more power then the current PSU can handle
Might be worth looking into a new PSU if thats the case (try to get more watts then you need)

Hello:
... advice on AMD or nvidia ...
- no one really needs bleeding edge, choose your hardware carefully
- new & shiny is always expensive and isn't necessarily the best choice *
- avoid any and all NVidia stuff like the plague.
- AMD video cards are excellent and have much better Linux support
* I run Devuan on a ca. 2007 Sun Microsystems U24 WS purchased used and upgraded 11/2015
Best,
A.

Thanks a lot everyone. It seems AMD is by far the preferred choice, I was leaning that way but i will say I've been running devuan 5 xfce on 2 machines, one is a really old hp stream it has 2gb of ram and works really, really good for everyday things the other is an i7 12400F, 16gb ram and rtx 4060. Devuan has had no problems running this this setup either.
