X.Org ------> ex-org?

Hello:

While getting my morning dose of espresso and IT news, I came across this article at The Register.

Tim Anderson wrote:

... Adam Jackson, project owner for the X.Org graphical and windowing system still widely used on Linux, said the project has been abandoned ...

Anyone familiar with what it says and the present situation?

Cheers,

A.

Re: X.Org ------> ex-org?

X11 is already in "maintenance mode", all current development is on wayland. The main issue is that Red Hat was the biggest contributor to X, so unless someone steps up, it will die - good or bad depending on how you look at it.

Red Hat are heavily invested in gnome project and that project are shifting to wayland, enabling it by default.  KDE project also have wayland implemented in their window manager.

Its funny how when companies make everything "their OWN" that the open-source community gets left the option of taking that wayside project and personalizing its commitment to a whole-nother level.

the xorg server is stable, and even if it were to be abandoned is not like there's anything preventing people from forking and continue developing it, remember gnome2, unity greeter, unity DE,  etc....

also who knows it, the "death" of x11 could be the birth of x12
