Devuan + s6?

Hi, Is anyone aware of when the s6 init and supervision suite might appear as an option in the Devuan installer?  Currently using/learning Artix + s6, but prefer a more fixed release type of distro.  My (very) limited experience with s6 has been all positive.  Cheers.

Re: Devuan + s6?

I can't give you a time estimate on when or if s6 will be a choice during installation. I've heard nothing about it in months.

The point-release of beowulf will add runit to the init system selection in the installer. Maybe s6 can be added in time for Chimaera. That's a guess.

Re: Devuan + s6?

Thank you for the reply.

I see s6 as a potential systemd killer, in terms of s6 being able to do the important stuff that systemd does, but in a well-designed and UNIX-friendly manner.

If s6 can be implemented in a few more distros, then perhaps other distros will have to take notice, and hopefully jump on board?  (Why use systemd when there is a better alternative?)

Any thoughts amongst the main Devuan developers on how good (or not so good) the s6 suite is?

Re: Devuan + s6?

You should take a look at Obarun has a better implementation of S6 than Artix.

Re: Devuan + s6?

oh well, necro posting this dead thread but seeing that there is a package for s6 2.7 on beowulf i'm curious if anyone has tried it as even tho runit is good s6 really seems like the logical next step with it being fully compatible with every *nix (at least in theory), i guess porting the services or writing some wrapper/compatibility layer to run service scripts wirtten for sysv or systemd is the biggest roadblock

Re: Devuan + s6?

There is also this rewrite by Danyspin https://github.com/danyspin97/tt once mature, well documented and tested for integration we intend to propose it as an alternative in Devuan, but it will take a while more I guess.

Re: Devuan + s6?

Cooool!!:  runit is now in the Beowulf 3.1 installer (though I have been happily using it in 3.0, for the past 2-3 months) and it works well.  Thank you Devuan developers!

Is s6 now an "almost certainty" for Chimera?

Re: Devuan + s6?

Also, I've just asked Distrowatch to update their "Init Software" details for Devuan.  Please check ... in case I haven't got that quite right.

Re: Devuan + s6?

some more necroposting, but now that tt is abandoned then runit takes priority and perhaps s6 will too?
