Updater and Synaptic

Until today I could click and open synaptic and the Updater.

Today for some reason I must open Thunar as root, and navigate to

/usr/sbin/synaptic

and

/bin/gpk-update-viewer

in order to use them.

Also Thunar vanished and had to be reinstalled!

Very strange, since I made no changes to the system yesterday. How did this happen and how can I restore them?
