I was able to reproduce this bug.
using same machine booting with Debian Mate the hardware edits as described by MLEvD are retained as expected

I feel like I was rude not to give update on this old post of mine. I am sorry about that.
As far as I remember, I screwed up both XFCE and MATE configurations. So I finally re-installed my desktop with MATE.
Thanks a lot for those who already replied to my post.
re-install? I do it all the time... usually ends up being the cleanest solution.

fresh install using devuan_beowulf_3.0.0_amd64-desktop.iso
Mate selected, without the "default desktop"
I am not getting a sound widget in the Notification Area
using mate-volume-control hardware tab, I see HDA Intel PCH Mono, but still no sound
Ideas?
BTW: with Debian Mate this all works transparently "it just works"
