#1 Installation » Is There Any Way To Directly Install Ceres? » 2018-06-24 05:29:23

Hello,

The question is essentially just what the title is asking: is there any way to directly install Ceres/Unstable?

I understand that is unconventional and usually not recommended, but I do know that it was possible with the Debian mini.iso (AKA the netinstall image) to install Sid/Unstable directly via the expert installation options.
I attempted to follow the steps I have used previously with the Debian mini.iso, but there doesn't appear to be an option on any of the Devuan isos for an Unstable installation.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Here is a link on how it is done in Debian

It appears that the files subdomain has gone through a bit of changing since yesterday, and the /devuan_ascii/ directory appears to have some legitimate ISOs and such in it, along with a torrent file. I wonder if this is the full release, sans announcement?

That helped, thank you! I would have seen that if I was on the mailing list; could have sworn I signed up big_smile
I ended up needing
libpolkit-backend-1-0-consolekit   0.105-18+devuan2.4  and
libpolkit-gobject-1-0-consolekit   0.105-18+devuan2.4

The other set didn't work for me; they were already installed.

greenjeans advice didn't work for me, considering my preexisting file was already concordant with the one you demonstrated, but thank you!

It seems that every time I post for support, I end up accidentally finding my own solution!

So, backports kinda worked, but not really. I was still missing some important drivers for Mesa I think, I'm not really sure.
I just made a system image in case of tragedy, then upgraded to Ascii. That went off almost flawlessly. The only problem now is that I cannot mount external hard drives. I apparently don't have the appropriate permissions. I find that to be a bit odd. I shouldn't have to be root to mount my USB drive. That's just silly.

Anyways, I will probably end up finding my solution like I have the past three times lmao.

I will post updates just in case someone else has a similar issue.

Hello!

I am trying to get support for my Radeon RX 480 on Devuan. Honestly I'd like to stay on Jessie but if Ascii will solve my problems I'm open to that as well! Really, for my gaming desktop I'd prefer to avoid Ceres because I don't want to have to reinstall if something breaks. On my laptop I run Ceres because I don't really care as much.

On my current Jessie install I have the kernel 3.16.0-5-amd64, llvm 3.5, and Mesa 10.3.2.
It is my understanding that I need kernel 4.15 for the most support and Mesa 17.6.
Is what I require possible for Jessie maybe by backports, or would I have to upgrade to another release?

Thank you!

Solution to anyone experiencing a similar issue:

Apparently the issue lies within pulseaudio. For some reason, it isn't starting with the system as it should! I will have to further investigate this issue to determine why, but a dirty and quick way to fix this is to simply reinstall the package pulseaudio and to tell it to start with the system by preforming performing the steps as follows.

su
apt-get remove pulseaudio
apt-get install pulseaudio
exit
cd ~/
echo pulseaudio --start >> .profile

And to confirm that these steps worked:

sudo reboot
Wait for the system to reboot
cd ~/
cat .profile

And make sure that pulseaudio --start is at the end of the output displayed!

I do not endorse my solution; it is kinda messy and doesn't really solve the issue... it kinda just moves it somewhere else. But, for me it works because I backup all of my important files regularly and I don't mind reinstalling my system should something go wrong.
Also, my audio keys still aren't working, but at least I have audio!!

Should I find a solution for that, I will document it! smile

Hello!

I know that issues like this tend to come along with running from unstable branches of anything, but I recently have noticed that my audio is no longer working. It was previously working and I haven't changed anything about my system, save for installing Steam. But most of Steam's dependencies are nVidia driver related. I am running Devuan Ceres amd64 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T420s 417429U. I have Intel HD Audio (I think) and the most relevant information I can find from lspci is
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series
Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

Binging this issue doesn't seem to provide me with information in the way of modules, and I cannot find anything on the De**an forums that are of any help; in fact, I haven't been able to find this issue at all! So I'm either looking in the wrong place or I'm just dumb. tongue

Anyways, has anyone experienced this issue before, or does anyone know a solution?

Thanks!!

P.S., when I click the mute button on the physical keyboard, it no longer lights up to indicate ataraxy as it does in Windows 10. I know that the system isn't malfunctioning because when I boot into Windows 10 the audio works just fine.

Yes.  I am part of the team that designs/maintains the Devuan website.  The backend is a bit of a hairball so last year I converted it to plain html as an experiment and option to simplify things.  I posted it on that old website of mine.  In the end, we stayed with the hairball.  Just last night I posted a proposal for some subtle color changes for the official ascii release.  Note that only that page has the changes.  Structural changes are coming soon too.

Interesting colour change. I like it!

Basically what the title says. Why is there a website that appears to have an entire copy of the Devuan website. Like, the website is about GMOs or something. It's unrelated to Linux... I think?
