12:17:04 <systemdlete> fsmithred: "grub-pc is not installed but you booted in bios mode" -- This message comes up immediately upon invoking the refracta installer. What does this mean, since I have not begun installing anything yet. (uh-oh, do I need to read some doc somewhere...?)
12:17:40 <systemdlete> oh.
12:17:43 <fsmithred> pretty sure there's a help button
12:17:50 <systemdlete> for VM installs, use text installer
12:17:57 <fsmithred> grub-pc should be in /
12:18:02 <fsmithred> the deb package
12:18:18 <fsmithred> 1. Help
12:18:35 <fsmithred> anyway, the instsaller is smart enough to install the package if it's there
12:18:52 <systemdlete> so, do I need to use text installer as per your readme?
12:18:53 <fsmithred> it'll ask you anyway. Say yes, copy files and install bootloader
12:19:08 <fsmithred> no, not if you have a desktop
12:19:37 <fsmithred> only use text installer if the graphical doesn['t work because gtk3 went crazy
12:19:44 <fsmithred> that hasn't been an issue lately
12:20:06 <fsmithred> but if you keep geting off-screen buttons, bail and use text installer
12:20:57 <systemdlete> what does it mean "if you are using yad version such-and-such" -- this is an ISO image. I don't normally roll my own. Are these hints and messages more for folks who build their own refracta ISOs?
12:21:12 <systemdlete> ok, thanks for that clue. Apperciate it
12:21:15 <fsmithred> yeah
12:21:17 <fsmithred> another clue
12:21:23 <systemdlete> ok
12:21:35 <fsmithred> you said "I haven't begun installing anything yet"
12:21:50 <fsmithred> you don't actually install anything because it's already installed.
12:21:51 <systemdlete> Right. All I did was click on the installer from the menu
12:21:59 <fsmithred> the installer just copies it to the hard drive
12:22:23 <fsmithred> make sense?
12:22:26 <systemdlete> so, no chance to do custom partitioning, other stuff, like lvm?
12:22:32 <fsmithred> no lvm
12:22:40 <systemdlete> ok
12:22:43 <fsmithred> you can have separate home and boot partitions
12:22:49 <fsmithred> you can encrypt any or all of those
12:22:54 <fsmithred> well, not boot
12:23:02 <systemdlete> ok
12:23:08 <fsmithred> but if /boot is part of the root partition...
12:23:19 <fsmithred> and you encrypt the root partition, then /boot will be encrypted
12:23:31 <fsmithred> and the installer knows how to do that correctly
12:23:56 <systemdlete> will there be an ISO image that is more like the refracta beowulf version? Or does that defeat the goal of refracta?
12:24:00 <fsmithred> it is possible to do lvm manually and use the text installer
12:24:09 <systemdlete> oh.
12:24:21 <fsmithred> I'll get a link for that
12:24:33 <systemdlete> I think my synapses are starting to get a few jolts of electricity now.
12:24:54 <systemdlete> I was using the text installer for beowulf when I installed refracta
12:25:16 <systemdlete> making more sense. This graphical interface is just a giant copy tool.
12:25:37 <fsmithred> https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=2323
12:25:56 <systemdlete> I guess I can test the graphical installer anyway. It can run while I go get food.
12:26:10 <fsmithred> run fast
12:26:19 <systemdlete> why, how long does the copy take, typically?
12:26:25 <fsmithred> about 10 minutes
12:26:30 <systemdlete> drat.
12:26:33 <fsmithred> and you have to answer a few questions at the end
12:26:37 <systemdlete> I won't even have my order in by then...
12:26:49 <systemdlete> what if I get the anwswers wrong? What happens to me?
12:27:02 <fsmithred> then you won't know your password
12:27:06 <systemdlete> j/k
12:27:18 <systemdlete> (of course)
12:27:55 <fsmithred> if you want to try the lvm and raid thing, you should wait until after you've eaten, so you have both hands. You'll need them.
12:28:04 <fsmithred> and fyi, I will be asleep.
12:28:09 <fsmithred> 1. Help
12:28:13 <systemdlete> one of the questions should be something like "did you actually read the release notes and install doc?"
12:28:40 <systemdlete> in fact, I notice that not one of the linux installers I have EVER used even suggested such a thing.
12:29:00 <systemdlete> for boneheads who keep forgetting that step...
12:29:13 <fsmithred> I lean toward using Ludivigo technique on some days.
12:29:19 <systemdlete> A message on the very first dialog box maybe.
12:31:22 <systemdlete> have a good night, fsmithred, and I will post my results here later.
12:31:31 <systemdlete> 1. help

13:58:40 <plasma41> I started the day attempting to make a change in the policykit-1 package. Much yak shaving later and I'm working on a patch for GNU diffutils. :-P https://www.davidrevoy.com/article861/yak-shaving
14:08:55 <onefang> Poor naked yak.

18:48:42 <jiefk> Help needed : My Devuan system stalls the boot sequence while waiting for network device to get up (DHCP messages). Thing is the machine is not always connected to network and I would like send DHCP discover to "background" so I get the rest of my system up and running faster. Any hint appreciated, thanks :)
18:54:04 <user____> uninstall networkmanager and configure network manually worked for some people
18:58:50 <user____> jiefk: report success if it works
19:10:18 <user____> I am curious if wicked will play a role in devuan network management https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/5mjom2/why_wicked_is_the_default_connection_manager/
19:10:49 <user____> even if that thread is 5 years old
19:29:28 <onefang> That's wicd, not wicked.
19:56:03 <lts> Also wicd depends on python2.7 which is EOL, and wicd itself seems unmaintained
19:59:46 <djph> isn't there a python3 rewrite in ceres ?
20:14:24 <fsmithred> djph, yes and it's broken
20:14:41 <fsmithred> and someone is working on it now.
20:15:18 <fsmithred> so it may get into devuan and debian again
20:17:56 <djph> ah
20:30:21 <user____> wicked that wicd was misnamed wicked and I missed it.
20:32:49 <djph> oops :)
20:32:58 <onefang> I always said wicd was wicked, every time it gratuitously rearranged it's config file and I needed yet another etckeeper commit.
20:34:23 <onefang> I don't use the wicked wicd anymore, but etckeeper is a keeper. B-)
20:45:01 <Centurion_Dan> I find network-manager to be far superior to wicked wicd
20:58:36 <fsmithred> if you have network-manager configured for two wireless routers that are in range, it does what it wants, not what you want.
21:06:19 <djph> I had to use /e/n/i with wpa_supplicant, because wicd is no longer available.
21:06:20 <djph> :|

23:38:40 <xrogaan> So, there's been something constantly inhibiting my screensaver through dbus. Started to piss me off, so I enabled verbose mode.
23:38:45 <xrogaan> And there, surprise: xscreensaver-systemd: 16:26:21: inhibited by "firefox-esr" since Tue Sep 14 15:55:29 2021
23:39:21 <xrogaan> that's when I watch a video or something though.
23:40:58 <buZz> xrogaan: correct
23:41:13 <buZz> any application can request 'do not enable screensaver now!'
23:41:37 <buZz> typical videoplayers do that
23:41:46 <buZz> and i guess browser with videoplayback aswell
23:42:28 <xrogaan> But my issue wasn't from firefox. Happens after I wake the computer.
23:42:47 <xrogaan> Continuously trying to remove the screensaver.
23:42:53 <xrogaan> So, I'll have to wait a bit.
23:43:58 <buZz> weird
23:44:06 <buZz> maybe your mouse isnt stable? :P
23:44:11 <buZz> bad mousemat or something
23:45:01 <xrogaan> dunno, verbose is active so I'll know;
23:45:33 <xrogaan> Stuff that I observe too is the screen shutting down, and quickly reactivated after.
23:45:50 <xrogaan> so, that seems to
23:46:00 <xrogaan> sorry, seems to put a nail in that theory
23:46:47 <xrogaan> steam seems to do some nonsense too.

01:03:22 <arpo> hi guys, could anyone help me with grub2 and UEFI? I have Debian 11 and Devuan 3.1 installed. Debian handels the main boot menu (windows, linux, system rescue, clonezilla) and I would like to chainload into the grub2 for Devuan. So that I can seperate the 2 grubs2 more. Under MBR ist was no problem. But my old method wont work with UEFI.

01:18:39 <fsmithred> arpo, I can tell you how I do it in a minute
01:18:42 <fsmithred> have to look at it
01:18:49 <arpo> sure thx
01:21:20 <fsmithred> make a menuentry in /etc/grub.d/40_custom. First and last lines look like any other menuentry.
01:21:29 <fsmithred> title and braces
01:21:40 <fsmithred> set root=(hd0,gpt5)
01:21:40 <fsmithred> configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfg
01:22:08 <fsmithred> adjust the partition to your needs
01:22:13 <arpo> ok
01:22:24 <fsmithred> then run update-grub in debian
01:23:31 <fsmithred> that's a good way to do it because then the newest kernel is always in the devuan boot menu, and you don't have to update-grub in debian every time the kernel changes in devuan.
01:24:19 <arpo> yes that is my goal
01:24:55 <arpo> thx... I'll be back and tell you if i got it to work!
01:33:46 <arpo> thx fsmithred it works
01:33:59 <fsmithred> :)
01:35:14 <arpo> now i only need to get rid of the os prober under Debian... then im happy and can play so much with devuan until is breaks *ggg* as usual
01:35:56 <fsmithred> you have to try pretty hard to break it
01:36:13 <arpo> oh belive me... no problem for me LOL
01:36:39 <arpo> that why i dont use Linux on the desktop normally... but i dont like where Windows is going
01:37:05 <arpo> so its time to try to get some of my hardware to work under Linux
01:47:21 <fsmithred> arpo, if you can figure out how grub counts menuentries, you can probably make that custom entry the default.
01:48:19 <arpo> sure no problem
01:48:40 <arpo> i had my very own grub config under MBR
01:48:52 <arpo> but all this extra UEFI stuff is new for me
01:50:41 <fsmithred> see rodsbooks.com for uefi education
01:50:55 <arpo> i think i found a solution
01:51:05 <arpo> Dual-booting Windows on UEFI with GPT
01:51:09 <arpo> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Chainloading
01:51:12 <fsmithred> https://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/index.html
01:53:29 <arpo> i'll be back
01:53:33 <arpo> thx for your help

02:33:39 <ArpO> @fsmithred thx...it works now all like it should

04:54:05 <jemadux> just installed in my moms laptop devuan with openrc .. why openrc beacuse it's my init on artix
04:59:26 <Xenguy> jemadux, Enjoy : -)
05:15:22 <Guest9183> does devuan offer a completely free kernel when expert installing?
05:15:32 <Guest9183> how is it different from linux-libre
05:15:48 <Guest9183> or what other firmware is referred to in " If you would like to select an alternate bootloader (lilo) or exclude non-free firmware, you must select one of the Expert install options."

06:02:28 <junicchi> any known solutions for no wifi interface on lenovo laptops with intel wifi cards?
06:03:03 <junicchi> i'm on the same computer running live usb debian, it successfully detects my wificard and gives me the wifi interface
06:03:22 <junicchi> but devuan beowulf i installed today doesn't see any wifi interface
06:13:33 <user____> install firmware? What does dmesg say about device vid:pid
06:19:54 <junicchi> i installed firmare-*
06:22:17 <junicchi> all i have is Intel controller Corporation Wi-fi 6 AX200
06:22:26 <junicchi> info from lspci
06:26:23 <user____> dmesg should show it (way up early in equipment detection at boot time since built in)
06:26:34 <user____> Also does it have a hw on/off switch? Tried it?
06:27:14 <user____> lspci -v should show a VID:PID code, equivalent for PCI.
06:38:33 <junicchi> no pid on lspci -v
06:42:50 <junicchi> ok upgrading to chiamera fixed
