I spent the day with digging in this horrible old BIOS and the Interaction with messed up USB sticks,
which do not behave as one would expect when isos are copied to them without proper complete erasing old partitions, mbr GBT and the like.
In this respect I miss a multiboot Stick (which works) for several Images and isos.
After having sorted this out, and using the regular Install of the netinstall iso I arrive at the same result
Failure trying to run : chroot "/target" dpkg --force-depends --install /var/cache/apt/archives/some......deb
from my post up there
/var/cache/apt is missing again.
However I copied the syslog and will bring it here, once I open the box and move the /dev/sda to this thing I am using right now.
There must be a difference if it must work on bare metal of 2008.
expert install server iso
with
cat /proc/meminfo > meminfo
more meminfoit is possible to see the memory needs.
only because of this
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=35494#p35494
There is still plenty of 600,000kByte in RAM available(free)
However /var/cache/apt is not generated when going to the step of install base system

There is a directory /var/cache/anna, which seems to be the replacement for apt , but then
package: anna

Who takes carte of the devuan installer ? @ralph.ronnquist?
Tried the same with server install
I had the same
Warnung : Failure trying to run : chroot "/target" dpkg --force-depends --install /var/cache/apt/archives/base-passwd.3.5.51_amd64.deb
/var/cache/apt/ directory is completely missing !
It seems, that the RAM of 1GB (-videoram) is not sufficient to install a devuan server, also it could once be done as an upgrade from the debian history
there is no top and the ps of busybox has no options. so I cannot see how much RAM is in use.
silently fails the installer without telling the true reason, why the install must fail
Hi
I ran a webserver with beowulf, LAMP, nextcloud which started failing the 23rd May 2022. Before on debian, later devuan.
Also ssh remote login and rsnapshot was scrapped. I took it from the net/grid on the 25th.
Yesterday I investigated and noted that fail2ban erases logfiles on every root login of root since 23 May. Having problem with upgrade to chimaera and especially ldconfig. This looks like another story. (hijacked?)
I decided to make a fresh install.
tried to make a fresh install now using the chimaera netinstall in expert mode. Release_notes_chimaera_4.0.0.md from Di 12 Okt 2021 12:48:01 CEST
this install fails repeatedly with a debootstrap error failing to chroot to "target/" .... also in install mode.
HW is this old Intel atom described here https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=4693
iso written with dd to the usb stick
tested now with kernel linux-image-4.19.0-20 from beowulf, but the function is the same missing.
vgacon.c patch has been backported to 4.19. to remove the code.
https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/s … ost1207037
Not everybody is happy with dropping this code, when LTv makes a ... decision
AND : /usr/bin/less is not available in runlevel 1 !
and I made another test :
ssh'ed from the console of the kernel 5.10 laptop to the server with Kernel 4.19
and the scrolling function is gone.
As I tend to work on the lowest level necessary this is really a PITA.
I tested tmux and screen on the DUT console.
They do not bring this functionality with them.
so Linus Tv is wrong, that nobody uses this functionality.
Anyone, who must access bare HW through the keyboard without intervening ssh tunnels etc, falls back to the functionality.
This haṕpens mostly during the first manual install.
And it is annoying, if the function is there in all other forms of graphic terminals, shells and tunnels, but not during a direct access.
Who tells LTV ?
Well, there is no generic Devuan console. I guess you are talking about the terminals you can open on the graphical DE. There may of them, Gnome Terminal, Mate Terminal, xterm ....
Why don't you tell us a bit about the environment you are working on?
rolfie
see above
There is a server (beowulf) which does not even have an xserver.
Edit:
uname -a
Linux "$HOST" 4.19.0-20-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.235-1 (2022-03-17) x86_64 GNU/Linux
used mostly through ssh , where the problem does not exist.
I have Laptops with chimaera, but also here I do admin tasks in the console.
Edit : And here the problem comes up.
uname -a
Linux "$HOST" 5.10.0-12-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.103-1 (2022-03-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Since some time I miss the function of page-up and page-down in the console. I do not recall when this was gone. If you want to see some output, which has passed the uppermost line in the console window, this output is lost. If you are lucky, you can repeat the event and pipe the output into less, then you can navigate in the output.
I happened to put an old 486 Desktop in service again last week, which was bought in 1998 and had not been in operation since Nov 2007 or so. Luckily it worked and it showed a SuSE7.0 install with kernel 2.2.16 installed and a fvwm95 desktop. that makes ~ 40 tasks !
And there I could scroll the console window up and down, I remember with Shift-Page-Up/-Down, as much as the size of the console memory permits.
How can i get this scrolling function in the devuan console again, as i do all administrative tasks in the console ?
happens not in x-terminals
depends not on zsh or bash (echo $SHELL)

I have recoll at the moment as a local search engine. It does a good job with my own cronjob in building a nightly database as a local user.
However the desktop app sometimes freezes or blocks the x server completely and then it must be killed from another terminal.
Or sometimes it does nothing seemingly from e.g. top.
After an undefined time there may be or not results of the search.
I am not happy with this recoll .
Edit : meanwhile I have seen that the recoll desktop has a cpu load of 1% maximum. Something restricts the application.
The niceness is 20 as all others.
When I wait for the result, I do not need a cpulimit or similar.
What is a recommended search engine having possibly a browser interface and running as root ?
What say se expörts?

since about Xmas my automatic updating via apt-cacher-ng fails.
It fails to download the release files, packages list and the packages completely or sometimes it is extremely slow.
retrieving the files via a browser or with aptitude excluding the apt-cacher-ng works without problem.
this is an error , which comes up from time to time now after 5 month of no trouble .

Yes that did it.
leaving it to the network-manager to handle all interfaces does the trick.
When I start my other laptop, without a carrier in the eth0, it has a very long timeout of 1 minute, until it proceeds without the interface eth0.
the culprit is here from /var/log/boot
Fri Dec 10 10:42:01 2021: .
Fri Dec 10 10:42:04 2021: Configuring network interfaces...ifup: waiting for lock on /run/network/ifstate.eth0
Fri Dec 10 10:43:09 2021: done.I found from 'man ip' that ip has a loop counter, default 10 loops, so probably there is a 'sleep' inside as well?
The kernel knows the state of the interface, maybe there can be a shortcut installed to jump that minute ?
from dmesg:
[11912.170762] r8169 0000:02:00.0 eth0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full - flow control offAsk the kernel to check the carrier, before attempting to raise an interface w/o carrier ? Where to fix ?
Ideas are welcome.
I came to this observation because calling eom (eye of mate) from thunderbird does not function any more since latest thunderbird 78.14.0
before I could open graphic views from thunderbird for svg.
From desktop and/or command line eom works as expected.
I had a setting to display a graphics which I receive everyday, an overview of the activities of a server the day before.
Opening thunderbird though the mate desktop and clicking on a picture attachment starts an eom process
ps ax | grep ' eom'
14500 ? Sl 0:02 eom /tmp/mozilla_$USER/sar07_xxxxxxxxxx.svgThe process starts, the picture exists, but eom does not show a window.
eom survives the end of thunderbird process, so it is detached.
Opening thunderbird though a command line in a mate terminal and then doing the same ,
clicking on an attached graphics, starts an eom process, the window appears and it is empty.
Clicking Next/ Previous then displays the graphic files in the /tmp/mozilla DIR., also svg
Opening png with eom works from thunderbird
opening pdf with atril works from thunderbird.
It seems, there is room for improvement.
The problem seems to be svg related.

Thanks
I can/could 'iasl -c' a new DSDT , but once the kernel had a way to incorporate that in the boot , but it was lost after kernel 2.6
Best would be to have that integrated in the initramfs build.
Chances are nothing to have that in the BIOS EEPROM.
My home server is an old piece from Intel atoms time.

Linphone 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 ist ein SIP-basiertes, videofähiges Internet-Telefon mit einer GTK+-Oberfläche, das die Soundarchitektur ALSA nutzt.
I discovered that linphone uses pulse libraries same as mate-setting and mate-volume and firefox-esr and chromium
long story short result : trying to remove these libraries breaks task-mate-desktop, Docs below
a) what are the consequences of having these package in the system but not pulseaudio server ?
b) How can I avoid that progs such as linphone , firefox, chromium search to attach to a pulseaudio subsystem and use only alsa?
c) or is some configuration possible to hide the pulse libraries
d) is it a bug or "it is a bug!" ?

I try to compile my own (hopefully slimmer) kernel now, but I miss the point . At
make menuconfig / oldconfig / localoldconfig / xconfig. 146 options are shown from tab completion, but these are not.
which packages provide these make targets ?
I need to reduce kernel size and weed unneeded out.
Hi
If you dont get a login Prompt, check your /etc/inittab
look at these lines
...
# The default runlevel.
id:2:initdefault:
....
# Format:
# <id>:<runlevels>:<action>:<process>
#
# Note that on most Debian systems tty7 is used by the X Window System,
# so if you want to add more getty's go ahead but skip tty7 if you run X.

3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6the 6 lines shall not be commented out.
in Runlevels 4 5 you have only one text console !
b) avoid the graphical login
edit /etc/init.d/slim (i have lightdm so I show you what I did)
do with your editor
vi /etc/init.d/lightdm
shift the "2" from line Default-Start to the line Default-Stop
result must look like this
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: lightdm
# Should-Start: console-screen kbd acpid dbus hal consolekit
# Required-Start: $local_fs $remote_fs x11-common
# Required-Stop: $local_fs $remote_fs
# Default-Start: 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 2 6
# Short-Description: Light Display Manager
# Description: Debian init script for the Light Display Manager
### END INIT INFOnow do
update-rc.d lightdm remove
update-rc.d lightdm defaultsshould apply similarly to slim
worked on my desktops
do
init 3 to start your graphical login

HI
I have a devuan beowulf installation.
I use aptitude after 1st install as my bread and butter tool for system maintenance. aptitude 0.8.11-7, same aptitude-common 0.8.11-7
in the section preferences there is written
URL to use to download metadata
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs
That means meta data of devuan packages will not be downloaded through this channel.
As there is a changelog inside the package, is there a case where a package has the changelog not inside?
a) If no : SOLVED, but then the setting is not important and may be deleted, minor bug,
b) if yes: major bug against devuan aptitude package
there is no information in man 8 aptitude nor in aptitude-doc-en, where this can be modified.
please advise.
setting possible maybe in $HOME/.aptitude/config?
best regards
Hello
https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pk … se=beowulf
I only see a 403 forbidden
Please fix.
Regards Erich
I remember programming locomotive controls with a 8086 back in 1986. The system had 16kbyte SRAM with an option for a 2nd 16kByte. So I put the second SRAM into the socket. Powered up, loaded the program. run it. Writing value<>0 to the second RAM resulted in all being 0 or false. Damn. Checking the program. Reading the address contents again and again. Eventually RTFM again. 2nd RAM needs a jumper next to it. Put the jumper. Works.
Clue : If you use beer everything will be false.
2nd Clue : The keyboard will become sticky with a Weizen inside. tried that too.
