The package libdbus-glib is dependency of firefox-esr, according to apt-get.

When I type apt-get install libdbus-glib, I get this:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libdbus-glib

Ah, so there is no such package.  Acknowledged.

Curious, I typed apt-get firefox-esr, and got this:

#3 Re: Other Issues » devuan daedalus: nothing is running in wine » 2023-11-20 19:14:55

Thank you for the replies.

The "missing" files are there. Checking the file from the first error message:

 $ find $HOME -type f | grep -i "zlib1\.dll"
/home/bob/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/zlib1.dll
$

In the meantime, I tried something that I knew would not work and it worked. I have multiple distros on this computer, so I, still in Devuan, ran the wine from the Slackware install. It runs fine.

I will check out the staging thing. Thank you.

EDIT: staging version from winehq.org works. Yay!  Thank you.

Nothing is running in wine. I've not used wine in devuan in a while so I am not sure what changed. That said, I recently finally got around to an upgrade to the latest Stable version of devuan.

The error message seems the same for all programs I've tried to run (in this next, an attempt to run guild wars, a windows game that up to how has always worked fine in wine):

The files are there. Not sure why wine can't find file <whatever>when fie <whatever> is right there.

Googling indicates that others have had this problem, but the solutions were unclear, though many results indicated that installing winetricks would fix it.

I then installed winetricks. Not sure what the difference is. Still nothing runs, so winetricks is not the trick? I'm out of ideas. Can anyone advise, please?

Thank you.

#5 Re: Other Issues » streaming_music_extractor segfaults in chimaera » 2023-11-18 20:02:41

Upgraded to daedalus and the problem still happens with the Linux version of the program. The big bother has been, the windows version is soooo slow.

I tried something new: I put a non-debian kernel in (with modules, of course). I ran streaming_extractor_music annnnd... no segfault. Problem solved. It's the kernel that is the cause. Go figure.

#6 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » What games do you play on Devuan?? » 2021-11-25 15:03:36

Surprised to see no mention of OpenMW. Original Morrowind can also be run through Wine but OpenMW is much more stable.

The instructions linked above describe only Debian. There was a link entitled "Preliminary Stable Builds - rolling version of current stable branch (maintenance releases)" which went to a page that did (finally) mention Devuan.

I'm a bit wary of a creating what they used to on the Debian forums call a "frankendebian" by willy-nilly adding repos. I've only been running Devuan a few months and so far have stayed with official repos. Can anyone clue me in, please?

edit: running Devuan amd64 for about a month now

Upon performing a "ps -e | less"  I notice two processes: gvfsd and fusermount.

In a previous distro, those were not present in a ps, though fuse was part a working part of that distro.  Odd, as the only time I remember using fuse over a year ago was for mounting a windows partition.  There is no windows on this computer now so I don't understand why a fuse-related anything would be started immediately every boot.

What I've been able to ascertain from research is that these may be daemons that do things that just don't apply to my workflow at all.

Can I (somehow) stop gvfsd and fusermount from being started a boot time?  And if so, what will break?

Thank you.

#10 Re: Off-topic » ssd failure » 2021-10-10 13:59:10

I've heard tales of exactly as it happened to you: sudden complete failure without warning. As I am running on a SSD, this also worries me.

Did you run with discards on or, if using LVM run fstrim every once in a while (say, once a week)?

#11 Re: Other Issues » connman failing in a strange new way » 2021-10-08 04:08:12

Thank you for the replies. The idea of restarted the connman daemon had never occurred to me. The next time it happens, I'll try that.

p.s. Would this be a good way to restart connman?

/etc/init.d/connman restart

From other distros I'm used to starting and stopping daemons that way, the service command is new to me.

I remember trying to get compiz to work in 2007 or so, and failing. I tried every year or whenever I switched distros or got a new computer. Always failure.

I'm nostalgic for something I never used. tongue

I'm running Devuan Chimera amd64.

So today connman (a network manager) failed in a strange and new way. I lost net (nothing strange in that).  Then it got strange.  The icon in the tool tray brought up an empty window instead of the usual list of network interfaces. it was as if someone has opened up my computer and removed all network cards.

Then I decided to see what was up from the console:

root@moonshadow:~ # connmanctl technologies
Error: The name net.connman was not provided by any .service files
root@moonshadow:~ #

Rebooted.  Got net, yay.
For comparison, here is some normal output from connmanctl:

bob@moonshadow:~ $ connmanctl technologies
/net/connman/technology/p2p
  Name = P2P
  Type = p2p
  Powered = False
  Connected = False
  Tethering = False
/net/connman/technology/ethernet
  Name = Wired
  Type = ethernet
  Powered = True
  Connected = False
  Tethering = False
/net/connman/technology/wifi
  Name = WiFi
  Type = wifi
  Powered = True
  Connected = True
  Tethering = False
bob@moonshadow:~ $

question
Has anyone else had this happen?

#14 Re: Off-topic » Operating System Backups » 2021-09-25 04:07:36

I use fsarchiver to backup an operating system partition, rsync for a home directory.

It's all on an LVM so I can make a snapshot of a mounted partition and safely backup from that.

If azura-dawn is your root LVM then, possibly, the initram lacks the lvm2 utilities? But those should have been added by the update-initramfs command, so it's a bit peculiar.

That's pretty much what I thought, but then the fact that the init ram fs then activates and mounts the lvm volumes (with discards correctly set to passdown, i used lvs to check) means that the lvm software must be the init ram fs (oh and when I looked in the init ram fs, I saw lvm in there).

It begins to look like the fsck call tries to happen before lvm opens everything up.

Agreed: peculiar.

#16 Re: Other Issues » file system check failed but did not detect errors » 2021-09-24 03:36:28

Right, so I finally got around to opening up the init ram disk. I hate looking at other people's sh/bash code. Arg.

Between that and snapping a pic with my phone during boot up (debian/devuan loves to the clear the screen during boot up, as well as on login prompts) I've got an idea of what is going on.

Near as I can tell, the init ram fs calls fsck early on. fsck then whines that it can't see /dev/mapper/azura-dawn. fsck must be running before LVM opens up (activates?  makes visible?) the volume. Then the init ram fs quietly and without any further fuss mounts the volume and boot off of it. The problem is not solved, but now it is revealed to be an init ram fs error not a disk error.

The only thing I am missing out on, therefore is the early (still in the init ram fs part of the boot process) file system check.

Since the last few distros I used didn't do disk check in their init ram fs's, nothing is different now.

#19 Re: Other Issues » startx slowwww to start when offline » 2021-09-20 19:35:12

Well, I figured it out. Rather, I got it to work. Pasted this in from a previous distro's /etc/hosts:

# This next entry is technically wrong, but good enough to get TCP/IP apps
# to quit complaining that they can't verify the hostname on a loopback-only
# Linux box.
127.0.0.1       moonshadow.example.net moonshadow

That comment, along with the man page for hostname, were my clues.

Rebooted.  Made sure I was offline.  Ran startx.  Blink: in the window manager without delay.

Running Devuan 64 Chimaera.

On my system I log in, in text mode, then, when I want to, I type startx to start up xorg & the window manager.

When my computer is not connected to the net, and I type startx, there is a minute before anything happens; I'm just staring at the text ode screen. When I am online, startx goes to a graphics mode screen almost instantly and starts the window manager without delay.

This is utterly strange. In several distros over several years, I have never encountered this!

Why would that make a difference? xorg has no reason to touch anything the net. Is it trying to send data to something out there?

Well I found a kludgy but workable workaround: I run the Windows version using Wine. As it is a command-line program, I can still call it from scripts. The only real downside is that the Windows version runs about ten times slower.

Thank you for the reply. I tried everything you said. No errors, but no changes. It is beginning to look like something is off in the init ram fs configs and that will be a pain to sort out.

So there is a rather handy music analysis program by "AcousticBrainz" called streaming_music_extractor. Give it an audio file of just about any tune (it seems to prefer .wav, and that's easy for me) and it outputs the time of each beat as well as the BPM and the key. I don't know how it can figure out what key it is in just from the audio but it does. This information allows various other software to do all sorts of sonic fun. There is a static binary available from the site. They are up to version 2.1 beta ... and have been for at least four years. I've used this same binary in two Linux From Scratch systems, Gentoo and at least two Slackware installs.

So I finally got around to running this in my Devuan install ... with unexpected results.  It segfaults.  Every time.  On every file tried.  I'm running the same hardware as I was on the mentioned Linux installs, so same CPU, RAM etc.

There is no error message of any use.  In fact, here is the complete (only five lines) output from a run:

Process step: Read metadata
Process step: Compute md5 audio hash and codec
Process step: Replay gain
Process step: Compute audio features
Segmentation fault

Has anyone else tried to run this program under Devuan Chimaera 64bit?  If so, did it segfault or not?  Thank you.

ps: Googing reveals others have had this problem but no solution: things like:
https://github.com/MTG/essentia/issues/565  so I expect I should ask on the debian forums but I'd really hate to go all the fuss of finding my old password or making a new account, plus then they'd probably just tell me "you're running devuan, that's not our problem."

pps: Link to the site is https://acousticbrainz.org/

In recent times i've been getting an odd sort of error message during boot. The messge is "file system check failed but did not detect errors". It does not stop the boot process. The screen blanks when Devuan reaches the login prompt so I didn't notice it for several days. After noticing it, I could not find it in dmesg. A grep of files in the /var/log directory could find no log of the error message.

The usual search engines found many occurrence of this error message but each for a different problem.

As far as I can tell, there are no file system errors.

Devuan Chimaera, 64 bit.

Do I actually have an error?

Thank you.

OK, from this thread ...
in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf, using ROOTFSTYPE=ext4 in addition to the already tried ROOTFS=ext4 fixed the problem.
