There's nothing "political" in the design of mainframes and dumb terminals. Computers were expensive and large back then and it would make no sense for every user to have their own mainframe.

The modern trends towards cloud and SAAS is more about profit. People, especially companies and bosses, will fall for it just as they are falling for the "AI" hype.

Once upon a time two hackers wanting to keep their timesharing computing enviroment alive created Unix.
Many people learned Unix and they all started sharing their big and ugly mainframes via small cute ttys.

And all (*) they were h a p p y .

The computing history wheels rolled.. Some billionaires were creating cool ads about our need to brake free for the orwellian big mainframe mentality and bite their personal apples.. And home computing came and later PCs.

And all we were h a p p y.

In the peak of the pc-era a guy started ~verse (TILDEverse)
A decade old effort to rekindle the interest in sharing a unix computer over the internet.

That minor-niche trend started in the heart of the personal computer era. (1)

At that time someone could see that as anachronism with left-ish communal cultural traits.

But 12 years forward and voila !... billionaires wants us all to give voluntarily our private hardware so they can put it in their data centers and then we could all start sharing that resources from our cute small thin pcs..
So .. xmm.. does that makes them billionaires with a socialist cause ??? Ironically these billionaires never miss a photo-op with their beloved president and they build their empires on government subsidies and support in what looks like a war-time economy in a tech race against another democracy and freedom loving country.

In that context many youtubers ,that thrived when we were pouring billions to the PC industry , now nag constantly accusing the greedy billionaires about their lost private gaming pcs claiming as their right to use 128GBs to play silly personal games one hour per week!! and align with a recent bubble internet trend of posts and videos predicting the burst of another bubble the AI bubble . All that happens in the ultra hyped .......
           . ○
   ◦ ◎ . b e
       ◯ o b B L v r
  ∘ ◉ ◦ u e e
       · O s
· ◌ ⊙ ◦
    ◦ ⊙ ◌ ⊙ ◎
       ∿ ◉ ∿ <-----\
¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ \-----quantum bubbles

(*) Although a minority emerged (unix-haters) which call (up to this day) unix a virus .. a small .. core with no dna of it's own.
(1) @ I had a couple drinks and woke up with 1,000 nerd
(2)https://www.youtube.com/watchQUESTIONMARKv=TkjG5EEBjHA
