Never had a problem with steam, except for this recent bug that doesn't let me view games that aren't safe unless I verify my id with a credit card

The OP was clearly having some dbus issues. There was not enough investigation done to try to fix it, just a switch to a different distro. If OP is satisfied with that, that's good enough for them. However, Steam does work in Devuan as many users, including myself, can confirm.

Hi, I also use steam and I have no such problems. Main difference is I don't use flatpacks. So, imo I don't think it's a systemD fault.

I am the same as Skidicarus. I just download Steam from their website as a .DEB file. I am on Excalibur, NVIDIA drivers, and sysvinit. No issues. This is on 2 different Dell Laptops, an XPS 9510 and a G15 5530 Gaming laptop.

Unfortunately I think this SystemD stuff has metastasized as far as gaming goes.

I've been gaming with Steam on Excaliber with no issues. I just downloaded the .deb file from Steam's website. The only piece of software that's required me to resolve systemd dependencies is Mullvad VPN. Nothing of the sort with Steam.

Thanks for the input everyone, I ended up on Debian13 Cinnamon and it all works........Unfortunately I think this SystemD stuff has metastasized as far as gaming goes.

this is pretty explicite. Check in /tmp folder if you have a dbus socket, if yes check its permissions. If not, (how) do you start a dbus session at launch ?

I use SysVinit, KDE (x11), AMD CPU, AMD GPU. The Steam flatpak runs good for me.

I have a feeling the problem might actually be with Gnome or DEs using GTK.
I think that because Gnome (the most) hates x11. I suspect Mint cares little on working with x11 and are focusing on Wayland.
Display servers can affect the init framework and dbus, overall your GPU may not be communicated with correctly.

Options:
1) I haven't ran Cinnamon in a long time, but doesn't it have an option for desktop shortcuts, under Properties, to 'Run with dedicated GPU'? Try running the native Steam app with that (or if you make a desktop shortcut for the Steam flatpak, try that too).

2) Make sure Mint is using the NVIDIA card. nano ~/.local/share/applications/steam.desktop. Find "Exec=" and modify the line.
Exec=__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia /usr/games/steam %U
Then restart computer.

3) Try a Qt based DE.

Please post a copy of the error messages you are getting. And a list of exactly which "stuff" fails to open. That might give us enough information to work out what's wrong.

What actual issue or error are you seeing?

Mostly stuff fails to open. Then when you try it from terminal you get a bunch of errors about udev sessions or mismatches. Usually a reboot fixes it but its odd. That is what Heroic was doing. Steam flat out refused to run after a few errors no matter what I did.

But udev is available in Devuan.

I know its probably a me problem but Steam and even Heroic Launcher have been a real issue lately from not having udev. Steam did not even want to start from Flatbak or Native.

I dualboot distros so I have been on Devuan for a long time but I just setup Debian on my other drive for now because of this.

Any other gamers in here that have any pointers for me?

FYI I am running Cinnamon(Xorg) and Nvidia proprietary drivers from the repos on both installs.
