No, sorry I was wrong. The desktop files are in

 /usr/share/applications

I have copied them in ~/.local/share:

$ cp /usr/share/applications/mate-*.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/

And I removed this setting from the file:

OnlyShowIn=MATE;

And now I can find them in my wofi menu. Probably for Desktop environments the desktop file should be changed in another way.

Well, I do create my own starter in the menu. No problem with that.

mate-utils provides other tools as well: mate-screenshot, mate-search-tool, mate-dictionary, mate-system-log and mate-disk-usage-analyzer. The package doesn't require Mate DE, maybe they work everywhere. Excluding mate-screenshot all tools work also on Wayland. I uses labwc and if it works for me, so I think they should work everywhere. I suppose mate-system-log was done back in the days when systemd wasn't adopted, yet?
What is missing are the desktop files, but running them from the CLI work.

mate-system-log is part of mate-utils. gnome-logs nowadays is meant only for systemd systems.

Is there anybody who has other solutions to display log files?

It doesn't seem to be a big difference between them for a basic use, at least for a local logging. I did some small changes for rsyslog config: I log errors in a separate errors.log file (I seen this on Void Linux Socklog, is as default), changed the default timestamp to local time and a more friendly date format. But I see that syslog-ng is already configured like this .

It works with mate-system-log as displayer.

I didn't know there is such a log viewer. I searched for one on the internet but haven't found a simple one, most of them are commercial products for complex use cases.

While I can understand their embracing of LLMs being a good enough reason to switch, syslog-ng is a product with proprietary and free versions, all hosted on MS github, so I'm not sure how long their current "on the fence" LLM usage stance will last:

In the long term, providing a Linux distribution, whilst avoiding LLM generated code may become next to impossible, especially considering the Linux kernel and it's corporate contributors, who have no qualms at all in using it.

Used the same iso for my text in a VBox VM. Was my second go, in an earlier iso from end of June no logger was installed.

What the performance concerns: Nothing that caugth my eye in this short test. It works with mate-system-log as displayer.

I don't know, haven't taken a poll or anything. So far it's just a test on the netinstall. Have you had any issues with it?

Of course, you're free to remove syslog-ng and replace it with rsyslog after the installation is complete. And I may change the default back later, if that's what most users want.

I have installed Freia (devuan_freia_7.0-202608191935_amd64_netinstall.iso) in a Virtual Machine and I noticed that syslog-ng is installed by default instead rsyslog. syslog-ng will replace rsyslog as default logging in the future ?
