Yes! This caused thumbnails to show up for everything:

rm -r ~/.cache/thumbnails

I renamed some video files and now the renamed ones have thumbnails. Bizarre.

Is there something I can do so that thumbnails show up for all videos, without me having to rename them all?

I'm on Devuan Jessie with caja 1.8.2. Caja's "View" is set to "Icons".

Here are the relevant settings in caja:

This followed by a reboot has no effect:

sudo apt-get install totem ffmpegthumbnailer

Any ideas what to try next?
