The biggest projects, including the Linux kernel, are now bankrolled, developed and staffed by corporations such as Microsoft, Alphabet, IBM/Red Hat, Meta and Amazon, to name but a few. Hence the arrogance - i.e. if you're not a corporation, or someone in the pay of one, your views simply don't matter - so you run along and develop your own OS.

Or just stop using Linux and use FreeBSD.

The "MS registry" or svchost nonsense isn't helpful. This just shows systemd fans that many of its critics are clueless. The gnome people love MS and Apple, so they  came up with gconf and later dconf, binary config dbs. Svchost is more like inetd. Systemd was inspired by Apple launchd, but has become a huge all encompassing thing that seeks to replace or touch almost every part of the base OS. They have put themselves in a position where they can now force through pretty much anything they like with the usual: "if you don't like it, fork it, but we're going to make it so difficult, you'll just give in and do it our way in the end..."

Much of Lennart's code is excellent, some of it is even a good idea... The attitude exposed by his (and various other obvious parties as well) continual attempts to force everyone to get in line and do things according to "the plan" for GNU/Linux is that of an asshole.

His comments are replete with "I know best, do as I say" sentiment, and examples of "force x to do y, because it's the my future" are not at all difficult to find.
Usually these boil down to "Gentoo is resisting again, assimilate harder", or "Let's make not doing things our way as annoying as possible", while still waving the "it's open source, change it if you want" flag.

The headline is a garden-variety example of the latter. Doubtless any upstream bug reports or patches will be closed wontfix, with the usual "it's open-source, fork it if you really care that much"... Knowing full-well that this sanctimonious "taint" message is not quite annoying enough for anyone to actually do so.

Ordinarily all this would be a simple case of "dev is a twat, ignore", but he has unfortunately sold his ideas well enough to big corporate (IBM, Microsoft, etc.) that they now see them (systemd in particular) as the leverage they have always wanted to gain control of systems-level GNU/Linux development.

Much of the current direction within systemd is toward "trusted" computing, immutable operating systems, and homogenising the GNU/Linux landscape... These things sound like they are for the benefit of the end-user, but the natural end product - the computer as a cookie-cutter "secure" (for them) appliance, controlled by the vendor - is a holy-grail for big IT.

Uhh, sure... If you've been living under a rock for the last couple of decades. systemd does just a mite more than "registry" (a title better handed to the likes of, say, gconf) these days.

I used to think more or less along the same lines.
But after reflecting on the matter (on and off fashion) I came to the conclusion that he may be an asshole, an idiot of sorts too.

I'd try to avoid continuing to underestimate Poettering, at your+everyone else's peril.

What I once labelled as being an asshole+idiot was the result of my frustration at what was going on.
But then I realised that it was my reaction (questionable and angry ad hominem manner) against the fact that he had evidently been working to infect Debian with the infamous systemd* for quite a long time, maybe years.

You do not come up with such complex shit overnight, no matter how capable you are.

After that, he outed himself by openly going to work for MS, where he now continues with the classic +30 year old Embrace Extend and Extinguish process we are all familiar with, process that he surely started from inside Debian much before systemd was ever heard of.   

* nothing but an MS registry for the Linux ecosytem
