Alas, the secret of controlling USB modems has been lost!

In the days of opensus 11, all I had to do was plug it in and set up the kppp dialer.
Today, the unlocked zte mf180 easily turns on under Win 8, but it absolutely cannot work under Linux (I tried about 6 different ones).
The hardware turns on everything, ttyUSB interfaces appear, but the modem manager first gets stuck on the connection attempt, and if you try again, it does not react at all, and ppp does not see the existing ttyUSB.
Maybe there's something wrong with udev, I don't know.

The gobi-loader package is available in the Debian sid repository. Firmware files from the 7xwc48ww.exe installed on Windows from here

agree with OP that a newer/more-modern solution may well be the most cost effective

I'll mark it as solved, although I couldn't connect.
Everything works in software, interfaces appear, etc. As for the connection, I obviously need firmware for my operator. In addition, generations of mobile communications have changed and 3G may simply not be supported. I think it will be cheaper to buy a modern modem.

But at least there is a solution to whatever is evidently wrong with that HW.

That said, I cannot imagine why it would be disabled in this manner, but then again ...
Cheaper this way for the OEM?

P.S. It looks like in my case the problem is in the SIM card, this is "sw disabled" in the nmcli output

cdc-wdm0: unavailable

Quite possibly (?) the correct firmware is missing/not being loaded.

I have a ThinkPad X201 laptop with a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 modem. The SIM card is inserted, the Firmware is loaded, a USB device

id 05c6:9205

appears as indicated here

But then nothing happens; in the gui modem manager it says “unknown status.
Does anyone know what is missing?
