But I was thinking on fully graphical systems, like System Rescue CD, for instance. Sometimes I want to check a new computer, wipe out a hard drive, and prepare some unusual partition scheme. And using System Rescue CD (or Knoppix, or similar) for these tasks is very comfortable. And I don't want to talk of others OS we usually are not very fond of here ...

Why use Ventoy, because you can demo various live distros to potential users, you can have one pendrive with different distros for different machines, think 32bit & 64bit, or even have a command line distro.

For personal 'rescue' purposes, I would use the same distro as was installed, if possible.

Is Ventoy really 'needed'? Probably not, but why not use it when it is available.

I find that a bit strange tbh.

Curiosity i suppose. I dont see any need for it myself. I will generally dd an iso to a stick and try it out then get rid of it. Except for knoppix releases cause they are invaluable and i generally collect each release on its own usb stick for historical reasons.

PedroReina wrote:

live rescue systems, just in case

But the Devuan ISO image has a rescue mode which lets you open a shell in the installed system with a working internet connection without having to manually chroot in with the API filesystems (bind) mounted. It's *much* easier and more convenient than random live ISO images.

I keep Trisquel and Void and Devuan on a ventoy 16GB stick. Very handy, especially the ability to have different live environments to jump into, or to be able to chroot into one of my different installed systems.

I found through a lot of time consuming trial and error that the Guix distro will not install from a Ventoy stick, although the Guix live environment works fine on Ventoy.

I have a 32 GB USB stick. If I want to try a new iso, just copy it onto the USB - no 'burning a USB' or anything. I have many things on there. I boot to it, and there's a menu of all the iso's, and you pick one and it boots. It is a marvel - it just works.
