Mrs. HoaS uses a console login and she isn't nerdy at all. I have it set to run startx automatically on login to TTY1 with this line in ~/.profile:

[ "$(tty)" = /dev/tty1 ] && exec startx

I am using lightdm now, but I should try the old method... I would be totally fine with starting with a console login... it is more nerdy!

That is correct. I tried with the Devuan beowulf Xfce live ISO image — just disable the display manager and use startx instead for a lighter, more secure desktop.

No, it doesn't. That hasn't been a requirement for quite some time now.

I cant find anything on the web in regards to if needs_root_rights=yes in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config could be a security issue, only time will tell i suppose. But interesting reading on lightdm vulnerabilities.

xdm is probably the better alternative for a login manager imo.

No, it doesn't. That hasn't been a requirement for quite some time now.

EDIT: Devuan may have needed that before it started using elogind but beowulf certainly doesn't need it (I've tested this in the live environment).

but startx still needs needs_root_rights=yes in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config via the package xserver-xorg-legacy, so wouldn't this be the same? genuine question, i dont understand this very well.

Interesting comment Stick.

I have no problem logging with .xinitrc as I only use one environment i3-gaps, but say I had two or more i3 , xfce so on how do you change without F1 from tty.

And from memory Debian's default is lightDM. Slim & F1 is so antiX.

It's better to use startx because that runs X under the normal user. LightDM runs X under the root user, which is *much* worse.

Just to add to this after updating to Linux devuan 5.10.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.13-1~bpo10+1 (2021-02-11) x86_64 GNU/Linux then rebooting to antiX and updating grub, on booting back to Devuan at the slim login screen, there was only a screen full of colored pixels. So I dropped to tty logged in then run startx when straight to xfce but slim was broken.

So I removed slim and installed lightDM rebooted and lightDM worked so changed desktop environments to i3wm logged in and all is now good.

I see... Thanks for the explanation... Indeed Slim is pretty dead but, don't know why, I just thought that someone at Devuan could just taking care of it...

I am fine with SLIM, as login manager it does a lot of thing that otherwise I should setting up by myself, I'll reboot and shutdown from the terminal if I need to do so.

Is the login session maintained after logging out & back in again?

SLiM is dead upstream and it doesn't support logind sessions correctly so perhaps try LightDM or GDM instead. GDM will run X under the normal user so that should probably be preferred.

EDIT: this behaviour is a known problem with SLiM — it doesn't support a 'default' session where multiple sessions have been enabled. Change to a different display manager if you want to avoid this issue.

Hi folks,

is there a reason why if you log-out and log-in with SLIM you can not restart or shutdown the computer through the XFCE4 menu or panel action button?

This is not a big a deal but it is annoying...
