That sounds like you've got the bare minimum vi implementation in a Debian-like system.

It's always been simple: create a .vimrc file and insert "syntax off" into it.

But now I get an error:

vi .bashrc
Error detected while processing /home/nobody/.vimrc:
line    1:
E319: Sorry, the command is not available in this version: syntax off
Press ENTER or type command to continue

Here's the contents of .vimrc:

cat .vimrc
syntax off

And it's in the correct location:

pwd
/home/nobody

Did something change recently in vi?

P.S. In case it matters, this is Cinnamon.
