Have you read the Devuan beowulf release notes or searched these boards? This is a common problem.

fresh install using devuan_beowulf_3.0.0_amd64-desktop.iso
Mate selected, without the "default desktop"

I am not getting a sound widget in the Notification Area
using mate-volume-control hardware tab, I see HDA Intel PCH Mono, but still no sound

Ideas?

BTW: with Debian Mate this all works transparently "it just works"
