[XFCE] Question regarding tray icons and the notification area

Tray icons such as the xfce4-battery-plugin or pavucontrol don't appear in the notification area but sit next to it on the panel. I'd prefer having all of them sitting in the dedicated notification area. How can i make them appear in the notification area? Simply moving them doesn't work obviously.

Re: [XFCE] Question regarding tray icons and the notification area

The xfce plugins are separate "applets" in xfce; they integrate in special ways to the xfce4-panel, perhaps even only by providing an additional library the panel executable loads. They are not generating the same consumable icons that can be captured in the regular "system tray" that is the Notification Area.

This shouldn't be the case for pavucontrol, right? Why doesn't the icon integrate with the notification area? There has to be a way to make it integrate.

Re: [XFCE] Question regarding tray icons and the notification area

Sorry, that's an xfce4 plugin!

 apt-cache search xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin
xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin - Xfce4 panel plugin to control pulseaudio

If you want a system tray icon for audio control, I recommend volumeicon, but I think it might be alsa-only.

Try pnmixer, use it for alsa but will work with pulseaudio!

You are right, my bad. I don't get it why the XFCE devs thought it'd be a good idea having those seperated.

I am currently using volumeicon with alsa but going to use to pulseaudio for convenient switching between sound cards.

+1

And yes, it works fine with PA, despite the name that suggests otherwise.

I like volumeicon-alsa and pnmixer...usually prefer volumeicon-alsa.

pasystray is a pulseaudio volume icon specifically made to go in the system tray. It's in the repos.

Perfect. Should've tried volumeicon-alsa before looking into other alternatives.
