Basically, desktop users don't need what systemd is about, it is really something that admins find useful, (so I have read).

I don't want or need it, therefore choose to use distros which don't force its use.

(I started using Linux full time in 1999, when we were only just getting to have GUIs, & was still connecting to the internet via a modem over phone lines.)

A discussion thread on reddit is stirring up the systemd argument again:

Why is systemd so hated?

I suppose some of us have grown tired of this and just don't want to rehash things again. However, I have made what I believe is a useful meta-reply to that question, i.e. talking not about what's wrong with systemd, but about attitudes and process.

In case you're interested, this is my reply to the main question.

Elsewhere in the discussion, a user wrote:

I cant blame distro maintainers to not want to maintain support for multiple init systems for the tiniest of percentage of users to actually gonna use the alternative.

and I've written - albeit with less authority I'm afraid - a few words about that as well.

FYI. I was wondering whether I should quite my own comments here as well and couldn't decide whether that isn't too self-aggrandizing...
