Ok guys, I was able to make a snapshot of my system using refracta snapshot tool, although I had to add these lines to "refractasnapshot.conf" exclude list or it wanted to copy my entire home partition with almost 3.5TB of data on it:

snapshot_excludes="/usr/lib/refractasnapshot/snapshot_exclude.list"

/home
/home/
- /home
- /home/
- /home/*

Then it squashed my system onto a folder on my home partition but, it wasn't an ISO file, it was suashed onto some file formats, then I had to take those files in that squashed file folder and tell refracta snapshot to use that to make the ISO, finally I got an 8gb iso file, I am in the proccess of burning it to a Usb pendrive and try to boot and install a usable devuan system from it, I'll be doing that very soon, I'm a very busy man and I hope to let you know how it went the sooner I can!

^^ Can't speak for fsmithred, but in my experience if you install Refracta-Snapshot from the repo, it will also install all needed depends to run it on a sysvinit system.

It's no exaggeration to say i've probably done it 1000 times. Worked perfectly every time. Possibly my favorite linux program EVER.

Thank you very much. Now I see how that all fits together.

As I suspected, the snapshot package brings along the dependencies required in Refracta OS, which is sysVinit only.

I really appreciate your pointing me in the right direction. I wasn't thinking ahead to the eventuality of making a live system, so might have taken a while to figure this out on my own.

Thanks!

You need to install live-config-runit, then refractasnapshot will install without complaint. It works. I've made snapshots with runit.

I have been running Devuan Daedalus runit on a couple of machines with great success. I am seeking a best way to create snapshots of my systems. I see that Refracta's tools, including refractasnapshot, are available in the Daedalus main repo.

Running a simulated install of refractasnapshot-base, I get

The following packages will be REMOVED:
 runit-init

I'm guessing that would be a problem, right? It seems runit-init is needed in order to get runit itself started.

I found that a bug report on this issue was submitted back in 2021, but have not found a reported solution.

I believe that the Refracta OS runs exclusively on sysVinit, so perhaps the Refracta tools (like snapshot) won't run on a system using runit.

Has anyone found a workaround for this seeming conflict?

I guess I could start over with fresh installs and simply use sysvinit.

Another option would be to start learning something like RescueZilla for taking snapshots, but I'd first like to see if there is a way to get refractasnapshot working for me.
