The same old story. Regardless of how anyone takes this statement ordinary grown ups are meant to take care of themselves. Elitist parentism is always unnatural and ineffective and far outside any realm of truth. Debian's decision is either based on politics or business, not this ridiculous virtue signalling statement.

As with gnome project and the Linux kernel, Debian is a dependent of corporate funding and leaving "X" is a PR and virtue signalling stunt, staged to deflect any outrage from the hordes of the professionally offended. They are also doing what the "community", SPI and those other "non profit" orgs expect them to do. It's important to see it for what it is.

The "professionally offended" are useful idiots who can be directed against specific targets, via the phenomenon of "social media", to defame and ultimately "cancel" individuals who don't follow the narrative - "not following the narrative" can be equal to not publically denouncing/supporting something.

We're at a point where major FOSS projects are top heavy with foundations made up of lawyers, managers and consultants. Making up supposed non profit foundations who were supposed to only exist to manage funding. "Sit back and let us manage all of the bureacracy we're going to introduce into your project". Many of these are staffed with corporate reps - so not just taking donations - who then steer the project to ensure their employers demands are met.

So make no mistake about it, Debian leaving X is for specific political reasons and not due to X's ownership' political affiliation or track record with regards to employees fair treatment and working conditions. Debian and the Linux Foundation still willingly take money from Microsoft - a corporation hell bent on infiltrating and destroying any credible alternatives to its own products.

Political opinions should only represent the individual, instead of the entire project. Debian is like that old man at a teen party spitting out trendy buzzwords to stay "cool" with that crowd, but it only works against their favor. Their association with Outreachy was kind of the writing on the wall, even more so with Systemd having been adopted "coincidentally" after its founder's death.

I will keep using and supporting Devuan, provided that the project focuses on good code over all else. If you follow OpenBSD's example in eating your own dog food, the users will come. I understand that you get most of your dependencies straight from Debian, but Devuan still provides some technical sanity to this day, when not everyone is into rolling releases.

ah Xitter, i abandoned it back in hmmm 2017 or was it 2018?
oh well don't remember exactly but using the fediverse is a much better experience than Xitter will ever be, for a start you curate your own timeline and the interactions go all the way from pics of cats and anime reviews to the latest AI stock market conspiracy theory all from the same guy, then you can also find yourself discuting with the free software absolutists on the licensing terms for a shell script that wraps a an MIT licensed binary all in the same hour, the old unhinged internet energy is refreshing to be honest you just gotta pick an instance that fits your taste.

My personal opinion . . . X is poison. I have no idea why anyone with working brain cells would touch it. But then . . . I never tweeted either. If Debian is leaving X perhaps, for once, they are making a sane decision.

... and to continue on the real X discussion; I note that xserver-xorg-core is already a forked package. Though not forked from upstream, but rather a fork of debian's project so as to add the libseat extension that provides the seatd alternative to (e)logind for input device mediation.

We can assure you that we will provide the xorg packages as long as debian keeps making them. Beyond that, someone would need to fork the packages and maintain them. If you have someone in mind to do that, please get us connected. We only have a handful of maintainers and debian keeps giving us more work.

That twitter post gives me cognitive dissonance. I guess I need to read the new debian social contract. It's obviously much different from the old one.

Debian may have made their decision for political reasons - but probably shouldn't have had a presence there in the first place. I don't personally see any need for the Devuan project to react or respond to this. Just seems like typical hysteria from the kind of person who contributes nothing, but feels that everything needs to have some kind of "community".
