This happens if you skip the step "load components". These "components" supply the required modules for the full installation.

I had the same problem... I downloaded the net install iso from the main mirror (as there is no mirror in Australia) and installed in expert mode. the only options for the file system were ext2, fat, fat32 and that was about it, as far as I can remember...

In addition, I also had the problem mentioned by someone else that it never gave me an option to create a user so I ended with a system I could not log in to...

I got around this by booting the media again and using rescue mode, attach to the newly installed system and set a password for root manually, rebooted and I can now log in.

Not sure yet what to do about the ext2 thing.... might just try this install again but I'm pretty sure I didn't miss a screen or option.

On a side note, boy what a shock (but a pleasant one) to see inittab and rc.d directories etc. I had almost forgotten about them after having been exposed to systemd for so long now on so many distros.

May be in expert mode you accidentaly skipped one screen. I did it sometimes and went to bizarre situations as you described. I prefer the expert method anyway, but sometimes a small error gives you trouble: just be aware.

the mirror you used may have a corrupted installer image, did you verify the checksum?

Where did you get the installation medium from? And when did you download it? What version of Devuan does it say it is?

There's an old Debian on the machine and I intend to just nail Devuan over it. That's not a migration, I guess. The installation medium seems to be ok so far.

Still strange though; you should have the same options in expert mode.

Is this a fresh install, or are you migrating?
I have never experienced the lack of ext(x) options during an installation, I've done quite a few.
You may have issues with the install medium/image; perhaps you could try download Devuan again, and start afresh?

This is a bit strange: I just restarted the installation not in expert mode, but with 'install' (first option on first screen). It now gives me all the filesystems options that I'd expect, including ext3 and ext4.

Hardware is quite an old iron, a Dell E6500, but I had no problem getting ext3 and ext4 formatted partitions when I installed Debian 2016 on this machine. The installation medium is an USB stick.

Maybe you could elaborate a bit more on: hardware, install medium, procedure ...?

I'm just installing Devuan Beowulf on my laptop. I've installed Debian quite a lot in expert mode so went to install Devuan with expert mode as well. During the setup of the partitions, if only had the option to format the partitions with ext2 (besides some DOS/Win file systems), but no ext3 or ext4 option was available. Am I misssing something or is Devuan really comming without ext3 / ext4?
