kwin can be restarted without any issue, but restarting kwin_wayland kills the session and logs you out. That alone is a good reason to stay on X. (sauce)

the xorg server is stable, and even if it were to be abandoned is not like there's anything preventing people from forking and continue developing it, remember gnome2, unity greeter, unity DE, etc....

also who knows it, the "death" of x11 could be the birth of x12

Its funny how when companies make everything "their OWN" that the open-source community gets left the option of taking that wayside project and personalizing its commitment to a whole-nother level.

X11 is already in "maintenance mode", all current development is on wayland. The main issue is that Red Hat was the biggest contributor to X, so unless someone steps up, it will die - good or bad depending on how you look at it.

Red Hat are heavily invested in gnome project and that project are shifting to wayland, enabling it by default. KDE project also have wayland implemented in their window manager.
